A lot had happened in the last few months. James' world had been flipped upside down and it was dizzying. Enough to make him wonder if he was ever going to do anything right. He'd gone from feeling complete within himself to feeling as though he was falling apart entirely. His world had shattered. The racing monkey's were still on an indefinite hiatus and he had the feeling that they weren't ever going to come back together as a band again. Which was both devastating and freeing. And then there had been everything that had gone on between himself and Charlotte. Upon confessing his feelings for her she'd told him about her engagement, which had shattered him. Though they'd moved past it, moved forward. He still hated the thought of being a home wrecker, even though she insisted that he wasn't. He still felt like it sometimes. Though he was trying his best not to dwell on it. Trying his best not to think on it at all. Which was sometimes easier said than done.

Now, however, they'd moved past it. They were no longer just something casual, something flirtatious and sexually driven. Granted, James being the kind of person he was flirtatious and sexual behaviour wasn't going to fade away. Now they didn't have to sneak around, even though there had been a fun element about that, it'd been draining at the same time to be honest. Now she wasn't engaged to someone else. And they were still seeing one another. Which he was absolutely over the moon about. Yes, it still hurt to think that she hadn't been completely honest with him before, but now she was completely honest with him. As far as he knew at least, and he had no reason to believe she wasn't telling him the truth. He'd always been completely honest with her. Well, if you forget about the fact he hadn't told her about his feelings straight away. But could he really be blamed for that. He'd been waiting for the right time. He'd waiting for the perfect opportunity. And, really, it'd all worked out in the end. Hadn't it?

Having just finished work he went home and took a quick shower. They'd arranged for him to spend the night at Charlotte's they'd been taking it in turns spending the night here and there. Though he honestly couldn't get enough of her and he wouldn't have complained about seeing her every day. Even if just for a moment here and there. Though he hadn't seen her for a few days and he was going crazy. He wasn't getting clingy. Was he? Making his way to her apartment, an overnight bag over his shoulder and his other hand behind his back with a bunch of flowers from work. They weren't just the discarded ones, he'd actually chosen them out. He hadn't got them for any reason other than the fact he wanted to get her flowers. He wanted to do something nice for her. Even if it was just a small gesture like buying her flowers. So with a knock on her door he moved them in front of himself a waited for her to answer. Beaming a huge charming smile as she opened the door. ”Hello gorgeous.” The smile never leaving his face. ”I missed you.”

there were so many days in her life that charlotte woke up tired. tired of petty family arguments, tired of being in a relationship where she had to watch what she said or did, tired of having to worry about what she said and who she said it to. since meeting james, it no longer felt like she was waking up wondering whether she was going to step off on the right foot. she looked forward to waking up and knowing that she was going to get to see him or talk to him. charlie hated the thought that she could have ruined this before they even actually started something. there was too much pressure that came with her surname, and although she had spent most of her life trying to shake that, it still crept up on her. it was why she was able to speak to lizzie in an actual sisterly way, rather than in the bitchy way she had managed since she was nine. she could understand the pressure liz had felt, even at that age, so she was trying to make up for all the years she had made her life completely hell. there were still moments that she wanted to put her sister's head through a wall, but she was now able to hold those remarks behind bared teeth, rather than let them fly. she had to thank james for that, or maybe, her family had james to thank for her ability to hold her tongue.

charlotte didn't want to give him any more reasons to doubt her than what she already had. the list of her flaws were endless, despite what she projected to the world, so she had tried to give him every opportunity to get out before either of them got their heart broken, again. she had lied to him, had cheated him, and yet he was still willing to stick things out with her. she knew it spoke more about him than what it did about her. she had warned him about her family, but he still came back after thanksgiving, despite every word that was said at that dining table. her parents didn't like silas, apparently no one had, but that didn't mean they would automatically like james. she was just thankful for brendan and isaac. she imagined that if her brothers weren't the semi sane ones in the family, she very possibly could have stabbed both ryan and liz that evening. although, she should have known that just having james there as an anchor, his hand squeezing her thigh, should have been enough.

she didn't mind going between there apartments, but she almost cherished the nights that he came to her's. it meant there were no interruptions, no roommates, just the two of them. she could have sworn that the two blondes he lived with still gave her dirty looks when they thought no one was looking. the proximity alone was enough to make her reconsider moving, but at the same time, she wanted more space than what she had. she wanted to be able to expand on her business, and whilst she could rent an office space, she hated the idea of not being able to do things in the freedom of her own home. she had to stop herself from flinging herself through the door when she opened it, but the smile on her face only turned wider when she saw the bunch of flowers he had brought her. "oh my god, they're beautiful. they are for me right? you're not just teasing me?" she teased, practically pulling him through the door and into a hug before reaching up to kiss him. he truly was too good for her.

James didn't want to push his luck or sound arrogant, but he felt like perhaps he might have been good for Charlotte. She smiled more now than she had when they'd first met. That had to be a good thing. That had to mean that she was happier. He didn't want to claim that it was all his doing, he knew that it probably wasn't all him. Though it felt like he certainly had a little to do with it. Even if just a tiny bit. He felt he had something to do with it. Though he wasn't arrogant enough to say 'hey I make you happier and you know it'. He wasn't really that kind of person. He'd ask in a much more subtle way but wouldn't take the credit. It'd sound more like 'you look happy today' or 'you're beautiful when you smile'. Paying her compliments with a gentle kiss on her cheek. He liked seeing her smile, liked seeing the way she smiled when he paid her a compliment or did something sweet and didn't think she was paying attention but she actually was an the corners of her lips with twitch upward into the most beautiful smile he'd ever seen.

That smile made him fall more in love with her, though he hadn't said it since that night in her apartment. He was too scared that he was rushing it. Saying it out loud was going to scare her off and he knew it. So he kept his mouth shut but said it without actually saying it. Showed it in gestures like offering to make her dinner or telling her to be safe whenever she went to New York for work or whenever she just went there for fun. Showed it in ways like saying 'sweet dreams' or simply smiling and holding her close whenever he saw her. Or asking her how her day had been and listening intently, genuinely wanting to know how she'd spent her day and what she'd gotten up to. There were plenty of ways of saying it or showing it without actually saying those three little words. Three little words that actually held so much power. The power to change things for the better or worse. But they would most definitely change things. So he kept them to himself.

He liked spending time with Charlotte at his apartment but it felt like they had more personal time when they stayed at hers. They didn't have to worry about Scar and Cat interrupting them. Cat usually kept to herself but Scar was the kind of person that would bash on his bedroom door and call crude things through it. And they both seemed to be shooting Charlie dirty looks here and there. Which he'd asked them to stop, but he understood the looks came from concern and protectiveness. Standing at her door he pulled the flowers from behind his back and grinned as she said they were beautiful then asked if they were actually for her. Though he didn't get a chance to say anything as she pulled him into the apartment and hugged and kissed him. Pulling back slowly as he kicked the door closed. ”Of course they're for you. I wouldn't tease you like that, gorgeous.” He wasn't like that.

so many times she had questioned herself. in the dead of the night when the moon hit her window just right and charlotte murmured awake, it was difficult not to question every decision she made. perhaps if she had been the one to say that she wanted to get into politics or law, then maybe she would have been happier sooner. but instead she'd pushed herself so far away from what her parents wanted for her. at least her brothers were business owners. she had a freaking arts degree. all to piss off her parents and make life apparently happier for herself. it hadn't worked. she thought it had. maybe that was the biggest question she had to ask herself. were you really happy? once upon a time she would have answered that with an unequivocal yes. but james had made her rethink all of that, and she was kidding herself for thinking she was happy. not when she knew happiness now. it felt like she was a little kid again, running through the park with the wind in her hair, chasing after ryan for pushing liz. that feeling of freedom that came with it, was a feeling that she hadn't felt in a while. but whenever she was with james, she had that same feeling come flooding over her.

it was easy to think she was falling for him. charlie knew she had messed with his emotions when she told him that she was engaged. but it was better to be honest at some point than none at all. all in all it had worked out better than none at all. she couldn't let herself lose hope that maybe one day he'd feel that way about her again. her heart all but skipped a beat at the thought. she had thought she would be spending the rest of her life with silas, but that had changed so quickly. she didn't want to rush james into anything that he may not want. so she smiled with all her heart and hoped that he could see just how incredibly happy she was with him. and she was much better at showing people that she cared about them, than actually telling them.

taking the flowers off him, she grinned. "good, because i can't let people who tease me into my home. that just wouldn't be fair," she said, pulling herself away from james ever so slightly so she could see him better. "they're stunning and i love them, thank you," she pulled herself away completely from him, smelling the flowers before walking away from him, and into the kitchen she she could put the flowers in a vase. she finished quickly before going back to him.

in the past james unfortunately hadn't had the best of luck with relationships. in high school he'd been in a relationship with a girl who later cheated on him with one of his friends. apparently they'd been sneaking around behind his back for some time and he hadn't been any the wiser about it. then the situation with charlotte. in a way it was cheating, but at the same time he was helping her cheat on someone else. so in a way he was both the victim and the villain. right? he couldn't be completely innocent in the situation nor was he entirely guilty. after all, he hadn't known about charlotte's engagement. and when he'd found out he'd gotten so hurt, so mad. he'd stopped talking to her. he went on a bender and got completely drunk out of his mind. he was drunk more often than he was sober for a little while.

and then things had changed. charlotte told him she wasn't seeing her ex anymore and they started working through things. honestly, he couldn't lose her. he'd fallen head over heels in love with her. perhaps that was why he should've stayed away from her. though against his better judgement he hadn't stayed away. and now he was happy he hadn't. he enjoyed spending time with her. enjoyed getting to know her. and in a way he felt like he was getting to know her completely and entirely. she was no longer hiding something. even though she'd broken his trust before, she was quickly earning it back. it would still take some time for him to completely trust her, to allow himself to feel what he'd felt before, but the walls were crumbling. they were coming down. quicker than he'd thought they would. she'd left a lasting impression on him, a good one. not just good, great.

”i would never tease you like that.” he said with a charming smile. chuckling softly as she said she wouldn't let people who teased her into her house. that was fair though. frowning slightly as she pulled away having said she loved them. not frowning because she said she loved them, frowning because she moved away. closing the door he set his bag aside and followed her to the kitchen. watching her get a vase and put the flowers in it. all the while he leaned against the door frame. ”they're nowhere near as stunning as you.” eyes on her with a soft smile. maybe it was cheesy, but he meant it. ”want to know something?” he asked, pushing himself away from the door frame and taking her hands in his. ”i'm really glad we're here again. but, you know, better this time.” maybe there was such a thing as second chances. and he believed this was a second chance for them. ”there's nowhere i'd rather be right now. no one else i'd rather be with.” his way of saying how happy he was without actually saying it. smiling before leaning down and closing the distance between them and kissing her. letting go of her hands and wrapping his arms around her to pull her closer.
